“I love him”: TalkSport pundit loves £150k/week Liverpool star “but” he’s not good enough for “Champions League games”

James Milner

Gabriel Agbonlahor says that although he admires James Milner, the 36-year-old shouldn’t be starting for Liverpool in Champions League games.

The Reds have had a strange start to the season as they’ve failed to reach the heights of previous seasons, but a win against Ajax last night has helped to change the mood.

During the tough opening spell to the season, Liverpool’s midfield has come under fire, but in particular James Milner.

Milner, 36, is out of contract next summer and according to TalkSport’s Gabby Agbonlahor, they may want to let him go.

Agbonlahor’s comments on James Milner

Gabriel Agbonlahor has told TalkSPORT (14/09; 08:13) that although he rates Liverpool star James Milner, the Reds need to be thinking about a replacement.

The former Villas striker said: “I love him, I really love James Milner. But at his age now, he shouldn’t really be starting for Liverpool in that midfield during a Champions League game.”

The Premier League veteran has over 600 club appearances across his career and has been a vital utility player for Jurgen Klopp during his time at the club.

However, Liverpool having to rely on a 36-year-old following a few injuries in midfield has always been a worry and the start of this season has shown that he can no longer be starting games at the top level for the Reds.

With his contract up next summer, it makes sense to part ways with the midfielder; after all, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are also likely to leave on a free as well as Klopp looks to reinvent their midfield.

Although due to his extreme professionalism and absurdly high fitness levels, he’s great to have around the squad, he will surely only stay if his role is reduced even more.

Rumours have linked Jude Bellingham, Ibrahim Sangare, Konrad Laimer and Joao Gomes as potential signings and Liverpool are surely ready to upgrade.

Milner’s days at the club may be numbered but he’s been a terrific servant no matter what the future holds and he’s been a brilliant free signing for the club.
