Key detail could see Liverpool overturn FIFA decision to bar Alisson and Fabinho from playing vs. Leeds – view

FIFA has barred several Brazilian players from representing their clubs in the Premier League this weekend but a key detail could see Liverpool and co. overturn their decision.

Liverpool and several other Premier League teams decided to not release the Brazil internationals called up by their country and the Brazilian FA have now asked FIFA to sanction these teams.

Alisson and Fabinho have been barred from representing Liverpool this weekend while Raphinha will be unable to play the Reds.

However, what the Merseysiders can use to wriggle out of punishment is the fact that FIFA have arbitrarily decided not to punish Everton and Richarlison.

Richarlison

This favouritism makes a mockery of FIFA’s own rules and should Liverpool appeal as they surely will given that two of their most important players are now set to miss the fourth game of the Premier League season, they could overturn FIFA’s ruling for all the Premier League teams affected.

Manchester United and Chelsea will be particularly hopeful this works because the five-day ban imposed by FIFA will see Fred and Thiago Silva miss their club’s first Champions League fixtures on Tuesday evening.

As This is Anfield points out, Liverpool could choose to ignore the sanction but this could result in a 3-0 forfeit which would be pointless when there is still a good chance for the Reds to get a result without their Brazilian stars.

Roberto Firmino is also sanctioned but his hamstring injury will prevent him from playing anyway.

There is a fair amount of tension between Premier League clubs and the Brazil FA and this issue will arise again in a month’s time and a month following that for the October and November international breaks.

The pandemic has had a disastrous effect on the football world and even with the rollout of the vaccine underway worldwide, issues like these ones continue to present themselves.
