Jurgen Klopp will regret allowing Thomas Tuchel to sign £90m midfielder unchallenged

LONDON, ENGLAND - FEBRUARY 06: Declan Rice of West Ham United warms up prior to the Premier League match between Fulham and West Ham United at Craven Cottage on February 06, 2021 in London, England.

A report from the Telegraph from May suggests that Thomas Tuchel has revived Chelsea’s interest in signing Declan Rice this summer but he is the perfect heir to Jordan Henderson.

Now, there was a time not so long ago that Liverpool fans didn’t care about the skipper much less finding his successor but with the 30-year-old not getting any younger and injuries beginning to limit his game-time, Jurgen Klopp really should be thinking about identifying his heir.

The Englishman is under contract at Anfield until June 2023 and while it’s sad to think that we might only have two years left of Hendo, signing a replacement is not too far away and I think Liverpool should be proactive about it.

Declan Rice started his youth football career with Chelsea but he might be open to working with Jurgen Klopp and the amazing squad he has assembled.

It would be too expensive to sign him this summer but Liverpool should explore a deal to sign him next summer when he’ll only have two years remaining on his contract.

The Telegraph reported last month that Thomas Tuchel has revived Chelsea’s interest in the Hammers’ star but after the Blues refused to pay £70m for him last summer and his price has reportedly risen to £90m, signing him could be an uphill battle.

Other interested clubs will be hoping that the Champions League winners can’t afford him this summer to stand a chance of securing his signature in future windows and Liverpool should be one of those clubs.

West Ham would certainly prefer to sell to Liverpool as opposed to their London rivals and I think there could be the opportunity for Michael Edwards to explore the concept of agreeing to sign him either in 2022 or 2023 when he would be cheaper.

Klopp would regret allowing Chelsea to sign Rice and given his ability to play at centre-back as well, the German would be giving himself two brilliant options within his squad and after a season that saw Fabinho play 21 games in central defence, Liverpool could do with more versatility in that sense.

This summer, anywhere between £70m-£90m would be far too much but should that fee dip closer to £50m then Liverpool would be making a massive mistake not making a move.
