Jurgen Klopp won the Premier League and the Champions League during his time at Liverpool but losing the Champions League final against Real Madrid in 2018 is still a haunting memory for the German.
The former Liverpool manager is away from the limelight now and has made it clear that he is not interested in returning to a coaching role at any time soon while accepting an offer to become the Global Head of Soccer for the Red Bull Group, which has sparked some extreme reactions.
However, he remains a fiercely competitive guy and despite all the success he achieved as Liverpool manager, losing to Real Madrid in the 2018 Champions League final still annoys him.
The circumstances of the game and the way Liverpool lost after looking like one of the best teams in Europe throughout the campaign still irks the German.
One of the pivotal moments of the game was when Mohamed Salah had to leave the pitch in the first half after a challenge from Sergio Ramos injured his shoulder.
Salah was Liverpool’s most potent attacking threat and Ramos neutralised him with his foul play.
Jurgen Klopp admits that he still doesn’t like Sergio Ramos
The former Liverpool manager was speaking to Ramos’ ex-Real Madrid teammate Toni Kroos in his podcast and the conversation went towards that final in Kyiv.
Klopp made it clear that he is not a big fan of players like Ramos and conceded that the defender almost felt content at making sure that Salah became a non-factor.
Can you name the club Liverpool signed these players from?
He stressed that he never understood the former Real Madrid defender’s mentality and the way he approached the game.
The German revealed that he would have made sure that he got rid of Ramos if he ever found him in his squads.
“He’s not my favourite player”, Klopp said.
“The foul on Salah, we all know he made it with great pleasure.
“I never understood his mentality. When I had players like that, I made sure they left the club.”
Liverpool and Klopp won the Champions League a year later when they beat Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham in the final in Madrid.
Sergio Ramos was not involved when Real Madrid and Liverpool clashed in the final again in 2022 but the result was the same as the Spanish giants won 1-0 at the Stade de France.
