Journalist crticises “nonsensical” transfer bid Liverpool were correct to reject

James Pearce has criticised the “nonsensical” offer Liverpool received for Caoimhin Kelleher towards the end of the summer transfer window, calling it a “bizarre” move from Nottingham Forest.

In August, Nottingham Forest made an offer of £7 million plus American goalkeeper Matt Turner for Kelleher.

Liverpool, however, had no interest in Turner and deemed the proposal far below Kelleher’s market value. Pearce, speaking on the Walk On podcast, was astonished by the lowball offer and Liverpool’s decision to reject it.

Pearce explained, “To my knowledge, the only offers Liverpool received for Kelleher were from Nottingham Forest. Their offer was £7 million plus Matt Turner, a player Liverpool had no interest in.

“Forest came back with a slightly improved offer, but it still didn’t come close to Liverpool’s valuation, which was between £25 million and £30 million.

“It’s baffling why there wasn’t more competition for his signature. Selling Kelleher for £7 million plus a backup goalkeeper they don’t want would have been nonsensical.”

Despite Kelleher’s expressed desire to secure regular first-team football, Liverpool were right to reject the offer. The Irish goalkeeper’s impressive performances, including a standout display in the Carabao Cup final, justify his valuation in today’s market.

Kelleher’s frustration over the summer’s events and the recent signing of Giorgi Mamardashvili, which further complicates his path to regular play, may increase the likelihood of his departure in the future. However, Liverpool should not settle for anything less than Kelleher’s true worth.

As Pearce notes, it’s surprising that more clubs didn’t show interest in Kelleher, given his proven abilities. When a suitable offer does materialize, Liverpool might consider it, but they should ensure they receive fair value for their reliable goalkeeper.
