Jurgen Klopp has found a new way to win games and it makes them stronger than ever – opinion

Jordan Henderson

Jordan Henderson’s strike against AC Milan was more than just a timely winner in Liverpool’s opening Champions League game, it was a reminder that Jurgen Klopp has winners across the pitch.

The Reds should have been out of sight inside 15 minutes but Mohamed Salah’s penalty was saved by Mike Maignan and the away side was let off the hook and it almost proved very costly!

At the time, Liverpool’s intensity and dominance seemed as though it would yield another goal so it didn’t seem like too big of a concern but two goals inside two minutes from Ante Rebic and Brahim Diaz saw Milan lead at Anfield in their first Champions League game for eight years.

Jurgen Klopp’s side went into the break a goal down and ruing their missed chances but thanks to a gorgeous dinked pass from Divock Origi after neat link-up play on the edge of the box, Salah found himself in acres of space and punished Maignan for not commanding his box with more authority with a cute finish.

The game was set perfectly at 2-2 and just needed somebody to step up and take their chance to become a hero on the opening day of the European season.

Statistically, Jordan Henderson was arguably one of the most unlikely to score on the pitch with Alisson Becker even scoring more recently for the Reds after his dramatic goal against West Brom last season which all but handed his team a route into the Champions League in the first place.

Henderson, following in from a corner, smashed a well-struck half volley into the bottom corner with all the flourish and technique of former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard and was met with an enormous roar from the Anfield crowd.

This season already seems like it’s going to be an odd one for Klopp and his trusty coaching staff to navigate. Injuries have already started piling up and Harvey Elliott has already had surgery on a serious ankle injury.

Yet, with Trent Alexander-Arnold’s deflected cross opening the scoring and Hendo winning the game with his strike, Liverpool seem to be tapping into goalscoring sources from all over the pitch.

With Sadio Mane seemingly unable to make the right decisions in the final third and Mohamed Salah Liverpool’s only regular goalscorer, Klopp is going to need goals from midfielders and defenders this season.

Hopefully, there will be no need for Alisson to get involved but I don’t think Anfield will say no to another header from the Brazilian!
