Liverpool’s habit of winning games last minute has become an important source of criticism lately. Skipper Virgil van Dijk previously mentioned the pattern and said it wasn’t a big problem.
The Reds will be back on Saturday after their UEFA Champions League match against Atlético de Madrid. Anfield will host Everton as the season’s first Merseyside derby will take place on the red side of town.
Against Madrid, Arne Slot’s men displayed resilience as once again the Merseysiders only won after a late winner in injury time.
The game started well in favour of Slot’s side with two goals in under six minutes. A free kick from Mohamed Salah in the fourth minute deflected off Andrew Robertson, opening the scoresheet.
In under two minutes, Salah once again fired home with a far corner finish to give Liverpool a two-goal lead. Simeone’s men weren’t backing down, though, as Marcos Llorente got them back into the game with a goal just before halftime.
The Spaniard scored again with a volley 20 yards out as the Rojiblancos had a chance to take this one home. Fortunately for Slot, skipper Van Dijk proved a hero as the Dutchman headed one into the net off Dominik Szoboszlai’s corner.

Despite the worrying pattern, Red Jeremie Frimpong doesn’t seem to be much worried about its effect on the Merseysiders’ game.
“Sometimes you score last minute. I’ve had a lot of last-minute goals in my career so far, obviously with Leverkusen. But the most important thing is that we won, and I think we deserved to win. We were the better team, played really well.”
“In a match, you never know when you’re going to score. Of course, you’d like to score earlier, but sometimes it doesn’t work like that. Like I said, it’s part of football. Sometimes you score late, sometimes you score early. It’s just like that.”
“When you’re 2-0 up, of course, we want to keep the lead or score more. But it’s the Champions League, we’re playing Atletico Madrid, of course, we can do better to stop it, but it’s football”, Frimpong told the media.
The Amsterdam native is pretty comfortable with how things are going at Anfield. The Dutchman focused on the uncontrollables of football and mentioned that winning is what matters more.
He ended his statement by just accepting the nature of the game, hinting that there is nothing to be worried about.
