“Should sign:” Carragher urges £90m superstar to avoid making same mistake as Brazilian and put pen to paper with LFC

Jamie Carragher

Jamie Carragher and Jamie Redknapp have urged Liverpool gem, Mohamed Salah, to put pen to paper to avoid making the same mistake as Emre Can, Georginio Wijnaldum and Philippe Coutinho.

The Egyptian was missing from the squad which beat Southampton 2-1 in the Premier League due to an injury he sustained against Chelsea in the FA Cup final.

His absence wasn’t felt as dearly as expected due to the fine displays from Roberto Firmino, Diogo Jota and Takumi Minamino with the latter two assisting and scoring respectively.

Yet, there is no arguing that Salah is not a key part of Jurgen Klopp’s side just because they won a game without him.

Luis Diaz and Sadio Mane were rested for the game after playing 120 minutes at Wembley and they’re also two of the most important players at Anfield.

Diaz and Mane should return to the starting lineup to face Wolves in the final Premier League game of the season which may well end in the Reds lifting the title.

That will take a miracle as it requires Manchester City to drop points but, with a report from Football Insider bringing good news, it doesn’t appear as though Salah signing a new contract should be a major doubt.

Mohamed Salah

Carragher and Redknapp have argued why Salah should sign a new contact – in case he doesn’t already know – and have used the fortune of previously sold stars as evidence to support their case.

Emre Can moved to Borussia Dortmund, Philippe Coutinho forced a move to Barcelona while Georginio Wijnaldum sealed a move to PSG.

Can and Wijnaldum aren’t the best cases for the argument as both left because Liverpool didn’t meet their wage demands while the latter desperately wanted to stay but the club didn’t value him enough to meet his requests.

Georginio Wijnaldum

Coutinho, however, is a better example and while he has won the Champions League, Bundesliga and La Liga since he left, his personal involvement wasn’t hugely significant and he would likely have been better served staying at Anfield where Jurgen Klopp famously declared he would have had a statue built in his honour, where the fans adored him and where he was a more important figure.

He since returned to the Premier League and is finely poised to do his former teammates a huge favour by forcing Manchester City to drop points on the final day of the season.

Carragher said: “I think Salah should sign. He [Klopp] has turned good players into great players and Salah is one of them.

“This suits him, Jurgen Klopp suits him, but I think he should remember about two or three players who left and thought the grass was greener and then look at what they are doing this season.'”

The forward is valued at £90million and while Liverpool could cash in this summer, his potential contributions over the next few seasons would be worth more.

The 29-year-old is reportedly in line to receive a £20million per season contract which would make him the third highest-paid player in the league behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Kevin De Bruyne.
