James Pearce says Liverpool gem is “like a new man” but he’s wrong

Mohamed Salah has started the Premier League season like a house on fire and given his age, it’s caught some people by surprise.

Really, there should be no surprise at this point. A key feature of Salah’s time in England has been constant underestimation followed by goals, assists and trophies.

When he joined Liverpool, it was with the label of being a ‘Chelsea flop.’

Then, he scored 44 goals in his first season. He also got 15 assists.

The following season started with Salah being labelled as a ‘one-season-wonder’. He responded with 27 goal, 10 assists and a Champions League winners’ medal. Liverpool also reached 96 Premier League points that season.

I could go on.

In short, the worst thing you can ever do is underestimate Salah.

Speaking on The Athletic’s Walk On podcast, James Pearce said: “It was so clear during the tour in America that Salah has come back like a new man.

“He’s completely unrecognisable from the player that ended last season – the break he had, the work he’s done. I mean, his physique is just incredible isn’t it? He is not your normal 32-year-old.

“As we said, he’s smashed it in all of the pre-season testing, beat all the rest of them hands down.

“And then you look at the way you start the season with three games, three goals and three assists – as Simon [Hughes] said, he could easily have had probably double that in terms of goals.”

I don’t see a difference at all

Personally, I haven’t seen a change. This is the Salah I have watched for several years now but the main difference is that those outside of Liverpool are beginning to give him the credit he’s due.

I mean, it’s pretty difficult to find a fault with a player who has over 300 goals and assists in 352 appearances.

Liverpool now just need to make sure they sign him to a new deal because Salah won’t be slowing down any time soon and it would be heartbreaking to see him at a club like Barcelona or PSG.
