I’d do it – Jamie Carragher urges Liverpool to rekindle interest in main club target

Liverpool are expected to spend big in the winter transfer window to back the work Arne Slot has carried out since he arrived at the club in the summer.

The Merseyside giants are sitting at the summit of the Premier League standings after five wins from their six Premier League games at the start of the season.

Slot has won over the Liverpool fans with his style of football and the way he managed to make sure that the team kept functioning despite an underwhelming summer transfer window.

Signing a number 6 was the club’s priority and Liverpool pushed hard to convince Martin Zubimend to move to Anfield in the last transfer window.

However, the Spaniard decided against leaving Real Sociedad and recently insisted that while the noise around his future was uncomfortable, he doesn’t regret the decision he made in the summer.

Liverpool have set aside funds to bring in a top-class number 6 in the January transfer window despite Ryan Gravenberch’s rebirth in the defensive midfield role.

Carragher insisted that the Reds must consider going back for Zubimendi in the winter transfer window.

The Liverpool legend is keen to see the club sign the Spaniard in January

Zubimendi and his family’s strong connection with Real Sociedad played a big role in his decision to stick around at the Anoeta in the summer.

The 25-year-old midfielder was said to be in two minds when Liverpool made an offer but he eventually decided to stay at the club.

Carragher conceded that he does get why the player rejected an offer from Liverpool given his deep roots at Real Sociedad and in that area of Spain.

However, he believes Liverpool must try to sign him again in the winter window if he is the player the club and the manager identified as their top target in the summer.

“The fact that the lad said no to Liverpool, I thought it was a strange choice on his behalf but I could understand because he was a local boy”, Carragher told Liverpool.com.

“His family and the club may be putting pressure on him and maybe he had a nice way of life there with his family and they were the reports that came out.

“I mean, if I was in this position, I still would’ve moved to Liverpool, but I can get the family ties so I wouldn’t be too critical of the lad for not coming.

“But also if I was Liverpool and that opportunity was back on to get him in January, I’d do it. If that was the player the manager wanted, you do it.”
