“I know Liverpool are talking to them already”: Steve McManaman says contract talks are underway

Liverpool have made the perfect start to the new season with three wins from three. The win over Manchester United,  however, raised more important issues at the club.

Mohamed Salah’s revelation that, as of Sunday, no talks had been held over his soon-to-expire contract understandably panicked supporters.

The Egyptian is out of contract at the end of the season and he’s not the only high-value Liverpool player that is at risk of leaving the club for free in June 2025.

Salah, along with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk, are in the final year of their Liverpool contracts. 23-year-old goalkeeper Viteszlav Jaros is also out of contract next year.

Former Liverpool star Steve McManaman has echoed these sentiments and urged the club to complete the deals as soon as possible.

He said on ESPN: “You hope the three deals will be done and I know Liverpool are talking to them already about these contracts now the transfer window is out the way.”

FSG will have to pay a lot to get it done but this is more important than any transfer business

Right now, there isn’t a trio in the world that Liverpool can sign that can guarantee the same level of consistency that Salah, van Dijk and Trent can.

It would also be vastly more expensive to replace them with players of similar quality and experience.

While Salah and van Dijk are in their 30s, they’re still operating at world-class levels with no indication that they’re anywhere near declining either.

Ibrahima Konate deserves an honourable mention with the French international out of contract in 2026. Of course, Ibou has had his struggles with injury but he remains one of the most exciting defenders in the world.
