Liverpool manager Arne Slot will be hoping that his key players return from the international break without any injury issues, especially as many of his squad have been involved with their respective national teams.
With players coming off demanding summers at Euro 2024 and Copa America, another international break could disrupt Liverpool’s early-season momentum.
Slot has started the Premier League campaign strongly, guiding Liverpool to three wins in their first three matches. However, with so many players in action for their countries, the Dutchman faces the challenge of maintaining this form while navigating potential injuries.
On a brighter note, several Liverpool stars are continuing their fine form on international duty. Luis Diaz has impressed for Colombia, while Trent Alexander-Arnold has been a standout performer for England.
One player closely watched by Liverpool fans is Ben Doak, currently on loan at Middlesbrough after missing much of last season due to a serious knee injury.
Doak’s involvement with Scotland has been carefully managed by national team boss Steve Clarke, who is aware of the need to gradually bring the young winger back to full fitness.
“We have to protect Ben,” Clarke said, as reported by BBC Sport. “He came off the bench and showed some good attributes, but I’m not sure the last time he played 90 minutes, and he’s not ready to play a full game at this level.”
Doak, 18, made brief appearances for Scotland during the international break, including 19 minutes off the bench in a 3-2 loss to Poland and just one minute in a 2-1 defeat to Portugal.
While these limited minutes reflect a cautious approach, they also signify the youngster’s ongoing recovery and gradual return to top form.
After joining Liverpool from Celtic in 2022, Doak made 10 appearances for the Reds, debuting at just 16 years old. His promising start was halted by a season-ending knee injury just before Christmas last year.
Despite the setback, Doak signed a long-term contract with Liverpool, signalling the club’s belief in his potential.
Though Clarke included Doak in Scotland’s provisional Euro 2024 squad, the winger had to withdraw due to injury. Now on loan at Middlesbrough under Michael Carrick, Doak has a chance to regain full fitness and showcase his talent for both club and country. His recovery will be crucial as he looks to impress Slot at Liverpool and Clarke for Scotland in the coming months.
