Speaking right before the transfer deadline, Gary Neville spoke about Liverpool and revealed that he thinks that Liverpool are plateauing.

There’s a belief in the football community that if you’re not moving forward, you’re going backwards. Liverpool aren’t the best example of that and they’ve perhaps been a bit unlucky recently.

Injuries decimated them last season and although FSG and Jurgen Klopp should agree they must shoulder some of the blame for not replacing Dejan Lovren, no medical team expects to have as many defensive injuries as the Reds did.

This season will once again see Liverpool gamble their hopes on the fitness of key players. Chelsea now have a ridiculous squad while Manchester United have a wealth of attacking talent a strong base in defence without a strong core in midfield and Man City still don’t have a world-class striker even if the rest of their team is littered with fantastic players.

Liverpool have the best defensive in the league and arguably the strongest starting XI but beyond that, their ability to win games from the bench is almost non-existent and Gary Neville thinks they are standing still.

Speaking to the Webby & O’Neill Youtube channel a few hours before the transfer window closed, Neville said: “Last season for [Liverpool] to finish third was unbelievable. [Klopp is] still doing a great job.

“And by the way, they are going to make a profit in this transfer window. They’ve got no money – that is one of the things with Liverpool. They haven’t got the money other clubs have got.

“There are no massive problems at Liverpool. I’m not saying it is broken. Not by any stretch of the imagination.

“But I don’t think they have got the momentum with them at this moment. They are just plateauing. I’m not sure Liverpool can get to first. I don’t think they will get above [United] this year.”

Neville is right. Liverpool have slipped up this year by not adding to their squad when there were several opportunities to.

Supporters weren’t expecting FSG to break the bank but not adding a new attacker to the squad could prove very, very costly and now that Roberto Firmino is injured, it’s going to be interesting to see if Origi and Minamino can step up.
