West Ham United could still be in the mix for former Liverpool defender Joel Matip, with “further negotiations pending” regarding a potential return to the Premier League.
West Ham remains interested in Matip, despite other clubs having shown interest in the seasoned defender.
Matip’s current status after Liverpool contract expired at the end of June
The 33-year-old centre-back remains a free agent after leaving Liverpool this summer, following the expiration of his contract.
After eight years with the Reds, Liverpool decided against renewing Matip’s deal, bringing his tenure at Anfield to an end.
Since then, Matip has been linked with several clubs, including his former team Schalke and Bayer Leverkusen.
However, no concrete offers have materialised, partly due to Matip’s lengthy absence from competitive football.
His last appearance was around nine months ago, following a torn cruciate ligament.
West Ham’s interest
West Ham are the latest club to explore the possibility of signing Matip.
Ruhr 24 reports that West Ham has expressed interest in the defender, and negotiations are still ongoing.
This move could be surprising given the significant investment the Hammers have made in their defensive line this summer.
Under new management, Julen Lopetegui has bolstered his squad with several new centre-backs, yet he may see value in adding Matip as a cost-effective backup option.
Liverpool’s current situation
Liverpool, meanwhile, have yet to find a direct replacement for Matip since his departure.
The Reds have not made any notable additions to their defensive lineup following his exit. As the new season progresses, Liverpool’s defensive depth and performance will be closely scrutinised, and Matip’s potential move to West Ham could highlight the ongoing adjustments both clubs are making in their squads.
Whether Matip will agree to a move to the London Stadium remains uncertain, but his experience and past performances make him a valuable asset if negotiations reach a successful conclusion.
