Former Liverpool ace compares The Reds to Arsenal

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain compares Liverpool and Arsenal

Throughout history, many players have donned the red of both Liverpool and Arsenal. Although when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain arrived at Anfield from the Emirates in 2017, there was a lot of buzz surrounding the player.

A lot was expected from the Englishman but there were only mixed results in the end. It would be illegal not to justify his important goals but the midfielder was a pretty on-and-off player during his time at Liverpool.

Having worn two reds of the Premier League Chamberlain once talked about the differences between the two. Although Arsenal has changed, Liverpool still boast the same mentality they have been garnering under Jürgen Klopp.

During his time at Arsenal, The Gunners were probably at one of their lowest points in history. Even with the legendary Arsene Wenger by their side, the magic just didn’t click in the latter half of his tenure.

Liverpool on the other hand had changed by the time Chamberlain arrived. Klopp had built arguably one of the best teams of the decade and it showed in the player’s mentalities.

“At Arsenal, we always went into those big games thinking, ‘This is going to be really tough’. That was the biggest difference at Liverpool, where, even in the first season when we were a bit of an unknown entity, there was this unbelievable complete and utter focus where there was nothing else happening but us winning the game”, the midfielder told The Atheltic.

“I don’t know why, but at Liverpool, the big games, we just knew we were going to win. We won FA Cups, but we probably never achieved what we should have done.”

“We had unbelievable quality. Football-wise we had everything we needed to do the business. We were just missing… belief? Toughness? Ruthlessness? I don’t know. Maybe it was a bit of that.”

Although Chamberlain would be happy to see the current Arsenal, the confidence hasn’t transformed into anything major yet. The Beşiktaş midfielder would find the current Gunners in stark contrast compared to his time at the Emirates.

Mikel Arteta has already done a makeover of The Gunners but there still remain a lot of things to be desired. Klopp on the other hand has transformed his strategy into silverware and now remains a cult hero in Merseyside.

At the start of the season, there was a fog of doubt surrounding Anfield. With Jürgen Klopp gone, no one knew where the club was headed under Dutchman Arne Slot.

Eight matches later, a new confidence has stroked Anfield with Slot being their new hero after the Jürgen Klopp era. Liverpool sit top of the Premier League table with 21 points to their name.

Although despite the changes, Trent Alexander-Arnold was confident about the team and Slot has proven to be the right man for The Reds.

The English international was focused and wasn’t fazed with the buzz proving Chamberlain’s point about the importance of mentality in this game.
