Fabrizio Romano says Liverpool still appreciate £51M midfielder despite rejection

Liverpool were quiet for much of the summer transfer window but eventually made a couple of notable late additions.

Federico Chiesa arrived from Juventus for £12.5m, while Giorgi Mamardashvili also signed. However, the Georgian goalkeeper is not expected to join the squad until next season.

In terms of midfield reinforcements, Liverpool were particularly keen on Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi.

The club prioritised signing the Spanish midfielder and were prepared to activate his £51 million (€60M) release clause, but Zubimendi ultimately chose to stay at his current club.

According to reports from Fabrizio Romano in the Daily Briefing, Liverpool remain interested in Zubimendi, although nothing concrete is currently in motion.

While there are no active negotiations, the club still views him as a potential target for the future, particularly for the January transfer window.

Romano said: “There are many factors before deciding if Liverpool will try again in January or not, but I can confirm that the appreciation is still there.

“They still believe that Zubimendi could be a perfect player for the tactical idea they have at the club, so let’s see. The appreciation remains.”

The club believes that Zubimendi’s playing style fits perfectly within Arne Slot’s tactical system, which could lead them to reignite their interest during the winter window.

The Spaniard’s calmness on the ball and ability to play through pressure while providing defensive cover make him an ideal candidate for the role.

Liverpool signed Wataru Endo as a midfield option after Fabinho’s departure, but he has been limited to just one minute of playing time under Slot so far this season.

Instead, Ryan Gravenberch has been given the opportunity to prove himself in the role.

After struggling for consistent minutes last season, Gravenberch now has the chance to make the position his own.

If he can establish himself as a key player, it could affect Liverpool’s pursuit of Zubimendi.
