With the Klopp era slowly fading away, Liverpool has decided to let go of another player who thrived under the former German manager. Aston Villa has reached a verbal agreement to sign Harvey Elliott on a loan deal.
“BREAKING: Aston Villa reach verbal agreement with Liverpool to sign Harvey Elliott, here we go! Agreement in place with Liverpool on loan with obligation to buy guaranteed for £35m package. Medical being arranged”, posted Fabrizio Romano on X (formerly Twitter).
The English U21 international had previously expressed his interest in breaking through at Liverpool under new gaffer Arne Slot. Although turning 22 forced the Englishman to prioritise his career with the 2026 World Cup in sight.
Staying at Liverpool meant fighting for the top spot against the likes of Florian Witz. A few more bench seasons would have jeopardised his career, with senior international football almost out of reach.
However, Elliott has decided to switch sides as he’ll be completing his medicals today in Birmingham. It will be a season-long loan deal with an obligation to buy.
The Lions avoided a direct buy to stay under PSR regulations, directing the buy as a cost for the next financial year. The deal is worth £35m, which The Reds seem to be using to expand their depth through the backline.

Interest from RB Leipzig and the follow-through in Birmingham

Earlier reports had suggested a switch to German Giants RB Leipzig, as the Saxonian side had hoped to replace outgoing Xavi Simons.
Harvey Elliott only made 18 appearances in the Premier League last season, with only two of them being with the starting XI. On the other hand, he had a decent record in Klopp’s last season at Anfield with 34 appearances, aged only 20.
With Leon Bailey departing for Roma, Unai Emery had to get some attacking reinforcements. Elliott proves to be a top choice offering Premier League experience at the age of 22.
The Reds, on the other hand, will have made a fat profit off the youngster, with his Fulham transfer being valued at around £4m. Add to that his hand in funding a potential Marc Guéhi transfer, and he literally cost Liverpool nothing in terms of transfer fees.
Elliott only has a tiny window to convince England manager Thomas Tuchel for the trip to North America. Never having made a single senior international appearance in his life and spending the last season on the bench at Anfield will add to the complexity of his precarious situation.
