£328,000/month star is “waiting to complete medical tests and sign contract” before he leaves- Liverpool accept decision

Divock Origi

Divock Origi only needs to complete a medical and sign his contract before he will officially join AC Milan in the coming weeks.

Liverpool have accepted his decision to join the Italian giants, it’s reported by Fabrizio Romano, as he is “definitely leaving on a free transfer”.

The Italian states: “Divock Origi has no doubts on his next destination: he’s just waiting to complete medical tests and sign the contract as a new AC Milan player in the coming weeks.”

In January, it was reported by James Pearce in the Athletic that Origi has a clause in his Liverpool contract which could have seen him stay at the club until the summer of 2023.

The Belgian’s deal states that if he played a certain number of matches his contract would trigger an automatic one-year extension.

The Belgian is paid £328,000 per month by Liverpool but he looks set to join Milan this summer. It will sadly end an eight-year stint with the Reds.

It’s unclear how many games he would have had to play or if he would need to start the games for the clause to be activated.

Origi has played just 18 times this season and so it may have been 20 games or even 25 – it’s unclear. That said, the Kop icon has been pivotal once again this season.

Despite playing a total of just 598 minutes, the talismanic striker has scored or assisted, on average, every 59.8 minutes with 6 goals and 4 assists this term.

AC Milan are signing an incredible player that has been relegated to the bench far more than he deserves but such is the quality ahead of him, it’s difficult for Jurgen Klopp to find a place in the starting XI for the no.27.

With Luis Diaz, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah first choice at the moment, even Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino are forced to sit on the bench more than they’d like.

Meanwhile, Takumi Minamino once again showed against his former loan club, Southampton, why he is a lethal option as he scored his 10th goal of the season, crucially equalising in a game which kept the club’s Premier League title hopes alive.

Klopp seemingly hinted at Origi’s departure after the Belgian scored his sixth career goal against Everton.

“He’s a legend on and off the pitch I have to say, that’s how it is,” the boss said.

“He is a fantastic footballer. For me – and I know it sounds ridiculous because I don’t line him up often – he’s a world-class striker.

“He’s our best finisher, definitely. He always was and everybody would say the same.

“When you see him doing these kinds of things in training and he’s not in the squad because of the quality of other players, that is really hard I can imagine.

“Today, again, other players were not in the squad who are in really good shape; really hard decisions to make because the boys all want to contribute and are all responsible for the situation we are in.

“But then Div. Everybody loves Div, and rightly so. He was, again, very decisive and I’m very, very happy for him.”
