Details emerge on how Liverpool missed out on record fee on deadline day

Monday night was a hectic time for Liverpool in the transfer window.

The Reds had been quiet for most of the month, before activity started from last week. Liverpool run the rule over some players at the club and decided on some moves. Arne Slot was also factored in the process. The Liverpool boss had a look at the youngsters and fringe players last week during the PSV game.

The match was an ideal game to rest key players, as Liverpool had already qualified for the knockout phase. Resting the players paid off as the reds secured a precious win against Bournemouth last weekend. Mohamed Salah scored a brace to maintain the team’s six point lead on top of the Premier League.

The Reds pushed back on multiple offers for first team stars during the window. Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Darwin Nunez were the subject of bids in January. Salah and Nunez had mega bids from Saudi Pro League clubs. Real Madrid made a bid for Trent which was quickly rejected.

Liverpool were determined to keep the core of the team together to see out the rest of the season. The plan for the club is heavily focused on the summer window. Reports claim that multiple deals are on the table for the club. Between now and the end of the season, Liverpool will have to find a solution to the current contract sagas. Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil Van Dijk could all leave for free at the end of the season.

The Reds also turned down the chance to make a huge profit on Monday night’s deadline. Paul Joyce reported that Middlesbrough brought an offer of £10million for Tyler Morton. The young midfielder had been subject to interest for West Ham earlier. Liverpool rejected the deal as they felt it was way below their valuation.

The fee for Morton would have been the joint-highest for arrivals in the Championship this month. Tom Cannon joined Sheffield United from Leicester for roughly the same fee.

Reds miss out on big opportunity

Monday night was the perfect chance to cash in on Tyler Morton. The young midfielder is way down the pecking order. And with Arne Slot taking a liking to James McConnell, Morton could go even lower. £10million for Morton would have been a good deal, and a very good profit for the club. Liverpool missed out on a huge opportunity. As it stands, the reds will not get a similar offer for the 22-year old this summer.
