The recruitment team at Liverpool have been working hard behind the scenes to identify potential targets for the upcoming transfer windows as sporting director Richard Hughes continues to plan the squad for the future with new manager Arne Slot.
Slot’s start to life at Liverpool has given Hughes and his recruitment team breathing space after a difficult last summer transfer window.
With the team doing well on the pitch under the new manager, the recruitment staff are working calmly behind the scenes to put together plans for the upcoming transfer windows.
Liverpool have plans to spend money in January but they could have bigger decisions to make next summer due to the potential of losing Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold for nothing.
Centre-backs will be a priority next summer regardless of whether Van Dijk stays or goes and the club have identified several young defenders who could come in.
However, Liverpool are also willing to bring in a more experienced head to replace Van Dijk if needed and Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah is on their radar.
The German club are still hopeful of agreeing a new contract with the Liverpool target
Tah was a major reason behind Leverkusen winning the Bundesliga last season and was Bayern Munich’s top defensive target in the summer.
However, the German giants could not agree on a fee with the reigning champions and the defender stayed at Leverkusen.
Tah will be out of contract at the end of the season and he has been vocal about not wanting to sign a new deal.
Liverpool are joined by Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich in the race to sign the centre-back on a free transfer next summer.
However, according to German daily Bild, Leverkusen are not waving the white flag in their pursuit of holding on to Tah.
It has been claimed that the German club are still hopeful of the situation changing in the coming months.
They are yet to lose hope of convincing the centre-back to sign a new contract with the club before his current deal expires.
However, as things stand, Tah would be open to discussing a pre-contract with any club outside Germany from January.
