Chelsea will regret allowing Liverpool to sign £45million forward unchallenged

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - DECEMBER 01: Diogo Jota of Liverpool FC looks on during the UEFA Champions League Group D stage match between Liverpool FC and Ajax Amsterdam at Anfield on December 01, 2020 in Liverpool, England.

Liverpool signed Diogo Jota for a £45million fee and while injury halted his progress somewhat, he has been a fantastic signing for the Reds while Timo Werner has struggled at Chelsea.

The Reds wanted Werner – that is no secret. RB Leipzig refused to allow them to pay the German’s fee in a favourable payment structure which made it impossible to sign him last summer.

So they signed Jota for £45million as Wolves allowed them to pay the fee on a more agreeable amortisation schedule and aside from his knee injury, he has been fantastic for the Anfield outfit.

I think Werner will eventually come right at Chelsea but Liverpool’s Portuguese forward has scored more goals despite playing 2068 minutes more in all competitions.

The only three reasons that make me wonder if Werner might have been better at Liverpool than he has been at Chelsea is Jurgen Klopp’s need for a striker, his tendency to improve forwards and the former RBL forward’s ability to get assists.

He might find it difficult to stay onside but he has a creative streak that is underrated.

8 assists in the Premier League is very good and if he can find his feet with regards to scoring regularly, he could be a scary player.

As things stand, Jota is the better player and he should get a lot more game time next season if he can avoid unnecessary injuries.

Jota is a valuable option off the bench for Klopp and can play in a number of positions. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED BY SKY SPORTS.

Chelsea will argue that Werner has had the last laugh as he won the Champions League this season with the Blues and that’s fair but N’Golo Kante and Kai Havertz were the real heroes of the final two rounds of the tournament.

Liverpool will be back next season and will be frothing at the chance to win their seventh European Cup and their second under Jurgen Klopp.

Ibrahima Konate will boost the Reds’ defence and that’s before Virgil van Dijk. Joe Gomez or Joel Matip return to the side.
