Champions League star reveals why he turned down Liverpool for Manchester City

Liverpool have missed out on a lot of transfer targets in recent years.

The Reds are one of the only top teams in the Premier League that do not make a lot of signings. This has meant the club have missed out on a lot of top players. Liverpool are eighth in net spend among Premier League sides over the past five years according to Football365.

Even this past summer, the Reds made just one permanent signing for Arne Slot. Italian international Federico Chiesa joined the Merseyside club from Juventus. This season, just like Jurgen Klopp did in recent years, Slot has also managed to get the best after a limited transfer window. The Dutch coach is top of the Premier League and Champions League group stage despite making only one signing since the summer.

Liverpool were linked with Bayer Leverkusen wingback Jeremie Frimpong after his impressive season last year. The wingback had nine goals and seven assists in the Bundesliga last season. Frimpong was linked with a move to Anfield but a move never materialized.

In a recent interview, the Dutch international revealed how he almost joined the club earlier in his career:

“There were scouts [at a grassroots tournament] like Liverpool, Bolton, Man City and a lot more,” he told Rising Ballers. “I choose Liverpool first. I was going to sign for them but back then, driving wasn’t a thing, my family wasn’t driving like that, and it was far.

“Obviously, Man City was local and I tried Man City next and then it made more sense. it was 15 minutes on the bus, so yeah.”

Frimpong joined Manchester City as a nine year old, and spent over nine years at their academy before he left the club in 2019. The wingback joined Celtic where he had a breakout season before joining Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga in 2021. Frimpong has gone on to make over a 100 appearances in a four year stay in Germany.

Reds still need to secure right back position

With Trent Alexander-Arnold looking more likely to depart Anfield over the coming months, Liverpool need to figure out a long-term option at right back. Conor Bradley has shown signs that he is ready to take over the role full time but the club would still need a quality replacement for the Real Madrid-bound defender.
