Celtic are in active talks with Wolverhampton Wanderers over a loan deal for goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, as the Scottish champions firm up their interest in the 33-year-old.
The Hoops were first offered Johnstone earlier this month, and have since moved to accelerate their pursuit ahead of the transfer deadline.
Celtic are seeking a temporary arrangement with Wolves, who currently play in the Championship, rather than committing to a permanent transfer.
Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph confirmed the discussions, stating: “Celtic are in talks with Wolves over a potential deal for goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.”
Joseph added that “it’s understood the Scottish champions are seeking a loan deal for the England international.”
Johnstone has dropped further down the goalkeeping pecking order at Wolves following the club’s recent additions of Joao Virginia and John Ruddy, who were signed to provide competition for Jose Sa.
Celtic boss Martin O’Neill is eager to bring in an experienced goalkeeper to compete with current stopper Viljami Sinisalo for the starting position.
The Parkhead club have also registered interest in Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Balazs Toth, who is in the final year of his contract at the Championship club.
However, Blackburn are demanding a fee of £4 million for Toth, a price Celtic are reluctant to meet after missing out on Champions League football this season.
The goalkeeper search is not the only area of focus for Celtic, as the club closes in on deals for Parma midfielder Oliver Sorensen and PSV Eindhoven defender Joel van den Berg.
Celtic are also targeting reinforcements at both right-back and left-back positions before the transfer window slams shut.
The club’s activity in the final stages of the window reflects O’Neill’s determination to strengthen across multiple positions as Celtic look to maintain their domestic dominance.
