Celtic are in advanced talks with Wolves over a loan deal for goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, as the Scottish champions push to strengthen their squad before the transfer window closes.
The 33-year-old former England international was initially offered to Celtic earlier this month, and the Hoops have since moved to firm up their interest in securing a deal.
Celtic are seeking an initial loan arrangement from the Championship club, with negotiations ongoing as the deadline approaches and pressure mounts to complete business quickly.
Wolves’ goalkeeper situation has shifted significantly after the club announced the signings of John Ruddy and Joao Virginia, leaving Johnstone facing an uncertain future at Molineux.
With little evidence of a long-term role for Johnstone at Wolves, a temporary move to Celtic represents an attractive option for both the player and the Parkhead club.
Celtic have been searching for goalkeeping reinforcements throughout the summer, following Kasper Schmeichel’s departure from Parkhead at the end of the 2025-26 campaign.
Johnstone is not the only goalkeeper on Celtic’s radar, with Blackburn Rovers’ Balazs Toth also under consideration as a potential addition to strengthen the position.
Toth is in the final year of his contract at Blackburn, but Rovers are reportedly demanding £4 million for the keeper, a fee Celtic are reluctant to pay following their absence from the Champions League.
Any incoming goalkeeper would compete with current number one Viljami Sinisalo, with Celtic boss Martin O’Neill keen to bring experienced competition to the position.
Celtic’s transfer activity extends beyond the goalkeeping department, with the club closing in on a deal for Parma midfielder Oliver Sorensen and PSV Eindhoven’s Joel van den Berg.
The Parkhead side are also actively pursuing both right-back and left-back options, looking to address their full-back needs before the transfer window shuts.
With multiple deals at various stages of completion, Celtic are working hard to finalize their squad as O’Neill looks to assemble a competitive group for the season ahead.
