By signing Chiesa, Liverpool now have something they have never had

Liverpool are close to signing Federico Chiesa from Juventus and it’s taken almost everyone by surprise. The deal is set to cost around €13 million which makes it even sweeter.

Going into the summer, it was not the highest priority to add a new attacker to the side even if it’s always nice to have more high-quality wingers.

But by signing Chiesa, Liverpool now have a top class winger that also excels on the right flank. Since signing Mohamed Salah, the Reds have never had a really quality option to provide cover for Salah.

Harvey Elliott is a brilliant player but he’s not an out-and-out winger by any means whereas Chiesa is a real chalk-on-the-boots winger.

He’s also able to play centrally as a no.10 and as a striker. With him added to the forwards available to Arne Slot, Liverpool now surely have the strongest attacking options in the Premier League.

Signing Chiesa by no means addresses the many questions Liverpool fans have regarding squad depth at centre-back and defensive midfield but all the same, he’s a very welcome addition to the side.

Having seen the attacking football on show in the first two Premier League games of the season, it’s mouth-watering to consider what the state of play will be with Chiesa in the mix. Slot’s style of football is incredibly fluid which is something that you can definitely say about the Italian winger.

He’s unpredictable on the ball, clinical in front of goal but particularly excels at interplay with his attacking teammates.

Diogo Jota will be one to watch as his ability to combine with Chiesa’s direct running makes me wonder at how many goals they might create together.

All things told, Chiesa is an absolute bargain signing and should allow Liverpool to compete on all four fronts such is the ability to rotate the lineup with him in the squad.
