Atletico Madrid set sights on unwanted Liverpool star

Liverpool will open the door for exits this summer as the club plans a revamp.

The reds have had a difficult week; after being knocked out of the Champions League, they failed to win the League Cup this weekend. Newcastle sprung a shock result at Wembley, which means Liverpool’s dream of winning the treble ended in seven days.

Arne Slot was disappointed by the result, but also looked forward to the future:

”Disappointing result, disappointing performance. So, completely different than I felt after the Paris Saint-Germain game. Losing twice in a row is something I think we do for the first time.”

”It was a tough week but it was also a week where we extended our lead [in the Premier League] to 12 points from it being 10, so it wasn’t all negative. But the last two were definitely not the way we wanted it to be.”

Sunday’s loss in the League Cup final was once again another showcase of Liverpool’s deficiencies. Newcastle managed to contain Mohamed Salah and did not allow him to get on the ball as much as he had hoped. They took Salah out of the game. And like many games this season, the rest of the attack failed to show up. Luis Diaz was completely anonymous while Diogo Jota had one of his worst games this season. Darwin Nunez coming off the bench failed to make any impact, as Liverpool eventually lost the tie.

This game once again proved why Arne Slot has asked the club for new faces ahead of next season. The Dutch coach is reportedly not a fan of the current set of attackers aside Mohamed Salah. Liverpool will expect a host of exits this summer.

One player who is already on his way out is Darwin Nunez. According to TEAMtalk, Atletico Madrid hold a serious interest in signing the Uruguayan striker. The La Liga side see Nunez as a perfect fit to replace Antoine Griezmann who is expected to leave the club this summer. Liverpool will be looking for a fee around £67million to part ways with the 25-year old.

Darwin Nunez’s time is up

Since the start of the season, it has been quite clear where Nunez’s future is heading. Arne Slot is clearly not a fan of the striker, and has chosen to play Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota out of position ahead of the Uruguayan. Liverpool should hope that they get a decent fee from the player.
