
Arne Slot has decided to make a bold decision in the Liverpool squad this week.
With a hectic schedule coming up from now till the next international break in March, the Liverpool boss has decided to keep the squad fresh. The Reds are not expected to bring in any new faces before the end of the transfer window this week, so the current squad will need to be maximized.
Over the past few weeks, key players have stepped up and played a crucial role within the team. Darwin Nunez came off the bench to score a brace in the win against Brentford showed how the Uruguayan could be pivotal after Diogo Jota was ruled out for weeks. Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliot have also earned Arne Slot’s trust with stellar performances in recent games.

Arne Slot makes shock Liverpool selection

Ahead of the Reds’ final Champions League group stage game, Arne Slot has made the bold decision to rest up to nine first team stars ahead of midweek. Liverpool are away to PSV on Wednesday night. Slot has chosen to res key players with qualification to the next round already guaranteed.
Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ibrahima Konate, Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Luis Diaz did not make the trip to Holland. But Slot did make a huge decision as he preferred to take star forward Cody Gakpo in the travelling squad.
The Dutch forward revealed in the pre-match press conference that Slot made the decision to select him in the squad to allow him to play against his former club:
”It will be a beautiful moment for me. The coach knew I wanted to be part of the team.
Since I left I have grown up, I am more mature and have more experience in my legs. All my family will be here.”
Gakpo made over a 100 appearances for PSV Eindhoven after being promoted from their youth team in 2018.
”I hope I will get a positive moment and people receive me positively. I’ve always had a great bond with the fans and the club.
If I score, I don’t think I will cheer that much as I am thankful for this club. I don’t think I’ll be too enthusiastic.”
Liverpool travel to face Dutch Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven, who are in 19th place in the Champions League group phase.
