Alexis Mac Allister says he’s very lucky to be playing with in form Liverpool ace

Liverpool’s midfield has taken on a new look this season, with Ryan Gravenberch emerging as a crucial player in the deep-lying defensive role.

His performances have left fellow midfielder Alexis Mac Allister feeling “very lucky” to play alongside him.

Under new manager Arne Slot, the midfield trio of Gravenberch, Mac Allister, and Dominik Szoboszlai has become a fixture in the Reds’ lineup, with Gravenberch particularly catching the eye.

Gravenberch has quickly established himself as a key figure in Liverpool’s midfield, stepping into the defensive position with ease after the club’s summer transfer window failed to bring in a specialist in that role.

His consistent performances have made him a contender for Man of the Match in nearly every game so far this season.

Mac Allister, reflecting on his partnership with Gravenberch, expressed his appreciation for the Dutchman’s talent.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the Argentine said, “I’m very lucky, I have to say, because Ryan is a fantastic player. When you play with good players, everything is easier.”

He added, “Everyone can see how important Ryan is for our team. It’s nice to play alongside him, and we’re still adapting and learning from each other, but I really enjoy it.”

The chemistry between Mac Allister and Gravenberch has been evident early in the 2024/25 season. In just six games, the pair have already been on the pitch together for 511 minutes, a significant increase from last season, where they only shared 957 minutes across the entire campaign. This season, Liverpool have won five of their six matches, conceding just two goals and scoring 13, showcasing the strength of their new midfield setup.

The duo’s ability to adapt to different situations, whether dropping back to defend or pushing forward in attack, has added a new dimension to Liverpool’s play. Their versatility is a key reason why Slot has trusted them in every game so far.

Mac Allister also touched on his own role in the team, explaining his preference for being involved in controlling the game. “Where I want [to play] is always close to the ball, that’s my idea,” he said. “I like to help the team in that aspect, control the game, be in possession. In terms of position, [No.] 8 and double six is completely fine. No. 10, I can play it and it is not a problem.”

As Gravenberch continues to thrive in his role, Mac Allister’s versatility and willingness to adapt alongside him suggest that Liverpool’s midfield could be a major strength this season.
