Celtic’s difficult summer has drawn sharp criticism from some of Scottish football’s most recognisable voices, with the fallout from a disappointing transfer window continuing to dominate debate.
Ally McCoist and Alan Brazil took to talkSPORT to share their concerns about the state of Celtic following a drab Glasgow derby and the closure of the summer transfer window.
The pair, both with well-established emotional connections to Scottish football, were candid in their assessment of how Brendan Rodgers’ side has shaped up heading into the new campaign.
McCoist, the former Rangers striker and one of Scotland’s most decorated players, pointed to Rodgers’ body language as a telling indicator of the manager’s frustration with how the window unfolded.
The Rangers legend suggested Rodgers would have been “unhappy” with the players brought in and those allowed to leave during the summer transfer window.
Brazil, a self-confessed Celtic supporter, joined McCoist in expressing genuine worry about the direction the club appeared to be heading after a chaotic few months of transfer activity.
The drab nature of the most recent Glasgow derby also featured heavily in the talkSPORT conversation, with both pundits lamenting the quality on display from both sides of the city.
A recurring concern raised during the discussion was the lack of Scottish players featuring for either club, with questions asked about what this means for the broader health of the domestic game.
McCoist and Brazil also noted that a number of Celtic players appeared disengaged compared to the previous season, which they viewed as a worrying sign for Rodgers and his coaching staff.
With the transfer window now firmly shut, Rodgers faces the challenge of galvanising his squad and silencing the critics who believe Celtic’s summer business has left them short of the quality needed to compete at the highest level.
