Liverpool are closing in on a marquee signing.
Entering this summer, would be close to a year since Liverpool signed a big name first team star. Over the season, only two major additions have been made to the first team squad. Federico Chiesa joined from Juventus, and Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia. However, the Georgian keeper was sent back out on loan.
After Liverpool’s successful first season under Arne Slot, the club have seen it fit to back the Dutch coach in the transfer market. The reds’ first team squad has been lacklustre in key moments during the season. Especially in big games, where Liverpool have had to rely on Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliot off the bench.

Alexander Isak rejects new deal as Liverpool move grows closer

Multiple reports have indicated that the reds will be in the market for a new striker this summer. Arne Slot is not a fan of Darwin Nunez, and has actively chosen to use Diogo Jota up top this season. When Jota was out, Luis Diaz deputized as the number nine. Nunez has failed to make an impact infront of goal this campaign, as his Liverpool career seems to draw closer to an end.
Liverpool have set their sights Alexander Isak this summer. The Newcastle striker reportedly wants to play in the Champions League next season. According to Caught Offside, the striker has rejected an initial proposal from the Magpies which has effectively put contract talks on hold. It has been rumoured that the 25-year old has his heart set on a move to Merseyside.
Newcastle are adamant that they will not sell the Swedish international, but a fee in excess of 150million has been mentioned.
Reds need to seal Isak deal
One thing Liverpool need ahead of next season is a potent goalscoring threat. Among various worries heading into the summer, the reality is that the reds could lose Mohamed Salah. The forward has been responsible for carrying the team this season. The 32-year old has lead the team in scoring and chance creation this campaign.
His teammates have often let him down, as seen in the last two games. Against Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle, both team isolated the winger. And with no one to take advantage of the attention he drew, the team were toothless in attack. Liverpool only managed to score two goals in the games against Newcastle and PSG, which is very poor for the club’s standards.
