£75M deal firmly in the rearview mirror for Liverpool with target set for new contract

Liverpool’s interest in Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon has cooled significantly following their acquisition of Federico Chiesa this summer.

The Reds were previously considering Gordon as a potential reinforcement for their attack.

However, with Chiesa now in the fold, Liverpool’s attacking options have been sufficiently bolstered, diminishing the need for Gordon.

Gordon had been on Liverpool’s radar since his impressive performances for England during the U21 European Championships.

Liverpool viewed him as a player who could strengthen their forward line, with reports suggesting that a deal was nearly struck before the Profit and Sustainability deadline on June 30.

The proposed transfer would have seen Liverpool pay £30 million for Gordon, with Joe Gomez heading to Newcastle in a player-plus-cash deal valued at £75 million.

However, Newcastle found alternative ways to manage their financial situation, which resulted in Gordon staying at St. James’ Park. Now, with Chiesa’s arrival from Juventus for £10 million (with add-ons potentially taking the deal to £12.5 million), Liverpool have significantly upgraded their forward options, making further pursuit of Gordon unnecessary.

Chiesa’s versatility and experience at the highest level make him a more immediate solution for Liverpool. The Italian winger brings not only pace and technical ability but also the experience of playing in Serie A and the Champions League.

His sharpness in training and commitment during the international break suggest that he is ready to make an impact at Anfield, further solidifying Liverpool’s decision to shift focus away from Gordon.

Meanwhile, Newcastle have moved quickly to secure Gordon’s future, initiating talks over a new contract.

While there were rumours of a release clause being included in his new deal, journalist Pete O’Rourke has dismissed such claims.

Newcastle are confident they can tie Gordon down to new terms by significantly improving his wages, moving him closer to the club’s top earners, such as Bruno Guimarães, Alexander Isak, and Sandro Tonali.

In the end, Liverpool’s acquisition of Chiesa means they no longer need to pursue Gordon.

Chiesa’s arrival has strengthened the squad’s attacking depth, ensuring Liverpool can continue competing at the highest level without needing to pay a premium for the Newcastle winger.
