Our View: Liverpool could soon announce a new signing after news from local journalists

James Pearce confirms that Lyon are in for 29-year-old Xherdan Shaqiri and his departure is exactly what Liverpool need to make a new signing.

Previously, David Lynch told the Liverpool Echo’s Blood Red podcast that the main obstacle between the club and completing transfers is moving on non-homegrown players.

Lynch said: “They [Liverpool] need to offload a non-homegrown player, so Shaqiri would fit the bill for that.”

Liverpool are now in talks to sell the Switzerland star to Lyon, Lynch and a number of other journalists have confirmed, and once he leaves it should be a matter of time before the Reds announce a new signing.

Why does a new signing feel imminent?

Jurgen Klopp never talks about transfers and yet, on Sunday evening, he refused to rule out any activity this summer.

He told journalists at a press conference: “I am very happy with the squad, but it doesn’t mean that we don’t look at the market.

“But as long as nothing happens, I am more than happy with the squad I have. I am more than happy with the players I have.”

It seems as though he is waiting for one or two things to happen and that could depend on Shaqiri leaving and perhaps Michael Edwards working his magic in negotiations for a target.

Liverpool have been linked with Renato Sanches for several weeks now and Mohamed Toubache-Ter, who Sport Witness says is a ‘reliable journalist’, claims the 23-year-old ‘could leave for Liverpool’.

The Reds could do with a striker but since Borussia Dortmund snapped up Donyell Malen, all links with attackers have ceased to exist.

The conspiracy theorist within me hopes that Michael Edwards has made this happen on purpose because he is lining up a target that will soon be announced.

As I’ve said a couple of times recently, the good news is that with the Premier League season starting in a matter of days and with the transfer window closing in three weeks, at least we won’t have to wait much longer to find out if Liverpool will conduct any more business.

Having fans back at Anfield the last couple of days has been amazing and the start of the new Premier League season is so welcome.
