Joel Matip, the former Liverpool defender, might soon make an unexpected return to Anfield, albeit as an opponent. West Ham United have, according to Caught Offside, offered Matip a two-year contract following his departure from Liverpool at the end of last season.
Matip, who spent eight years at Liverpool, made 201 appearances and contributed to seven major trophies, including the Premier League and Champions League. However, his final months at Anfield were marred by an ACL injury, which kept him sidelined for the last five months of his tenure.
Since leaving Liverpool, Matip has attracted interest from several clubs, including Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen. West Ham, having recently lost Kurt Zouma to Saudi Arabia and Thilo Kehrer to Monaco, are now keen to bolster their defensive options. Julen Lopetegui’s side has reportedly offered Matip a deal extending until 2026.
Liverpool are set to face West Ham in the Carabao Cup on September 25. If Matip signs with the Hammers before then and recovers from his knee issue, he could face his former club.
Jurgen Klopp, Matip’s former manager at Liverpool, paid tribute to the defender upon his departure, praising him as a “wonderful professional” and “wonderful footballer.” Klopp highlighted Matip’s contributions to the team and expressed deep appreciation for his role in Liverpool’s success, despite the defender’s low profile. Klopp’s comments underscore the respect and affection Matip earned during his time at Anfield.
