Fabrizio Romano reports that Georginio Wijnaldum signed his Barcelona contract yesterday which will last until June 2024 after a verbal agreement was reached three days ago.
The Italian journalist, reporting from his Twitter account, wrote: “Gini Wijnaldum will sign his contract with Barcelona until June 2024 in the next hours [27 May], after the verbal agreement reached two days ago [three days ago at the time of publishing].
“Done deal. Wijnaldum agents are now meeting with Barça board in order to complete the deal.”
Transfermarkt value him at £27m but Liverpool are forced to let the Dutchman leave for free as his contract expires at the end of June which will allow him to join Barcelona for free on July 1st where he will remain until the summer of 2024.

Liverpool fans are often torn over whether Wijnaldum is world class or not but there is no denying that he’s a club legend not just for his clutch moments against Barcelona in the Champions League but also for his tireless efforts during the Premier League winning season in 2019/20.
In his five years at the club, Wijnaldum made 237 appearances – the most of any player in that period. A total of 18239 minutes on the pitch not to mention the hours spent on the training pitches at Kirkby and Melwood.
The former Newcastle United midfielder has given his all for Liverpool Football Club and while nobody is saying he’s perfect, he departs with winners medals in the Premier League, the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.
He’s also got a Champions League runners-up medal.

While he achieved a lot at Liverpool, his most iconic moments came at Anfield on May 7th. 2019.
Two very different goals but equally important in their own right.
The first came from a wicked Trent Alexander-Arnold cross to reignite the Reds’ chances of achieving their own remontada against a side that had devastated PSG’s Champions League hopes by thrashing them 6-1 at Camp Nou after losing the first leg 4-0 at Parc des Princes two years prior.
Jurgen Klopp’s side went into the game against Barcelona with a 3-0 deficit and came out with a 4-0 win.
The equaliser came through a Steven Gerrard-esque header from Wijnaldum. It was so reminiscent of the one that the Liverpool icon scored against AC Milan to start the scoring in the most famous of all European comebacks in Istanbul in 2005.

Anfield erupted and the rest is history as Liverpool went on to claim their sixth European Cup by beating Spurs in Madrid.
What a legacy to have as a Liverpool midfielder.
Just as Emre Can left the club after his contract ran out, I have no problem with Wijnaldum leaving the club upon the expiry of his terms. He has been one of the best servants this team has had and he’s fulfilled the responsibility he was assigned when he signed a contract with the club.
I wish him all the best and hope Liverpool meet him and his Barcelona teammates in the Champions League next season.
