When Luis Suarez set the Premier League alight

Luis Suarez has hit the 500 career goal mark – something very few ever manage to do.

The most successful time in his career was spent in Spain. As part of the fabled MSN trio with Neymar and Lionel Messi, he helped form arguably the greatest front three in history.

However, Liverpool fans will remember him for a season that ended in tragedy. A season that pushed the Reds closer to the summit of English football than they had been in decades.

In 2013, Suarez wanted out of Liverpool. However, a move to Arsenal never materialised, and Steven Gerrard helped convince him to give the Reds one more season.

When he returned alongside Daniel Sturridge, it was clear something special was happening. A blur of aggression, speed, and pure ability, they were terrifying for any defence.

His return against Sunderland was a sign of things to come. However, it was a match against West Brom that truly signalled his place as the best in the league. An Anfield hat-trick crowned by a truly ridiculous header from the edge of the box. Then, came that match against Norwich.

The first goal, a flying volley from all of 40 yards, looping over John Ruddy. The second, a poached effort from six yards out. The third, a searing half volley from the edge of the box after a gorgeous dribble. Finally, a beautiful 30-yard free-kick to finish it all off. This is one of the greatest displays English football has ever seen.

However, for all his goals, his genius, the sheer glorious madness of that season, it all ended in tears.

The sight of him crying into Steven Gerrard’s shoulder after the Reds threw away a three-goal lead at Crystal Palace was enough to break most Liverpool fans. He’d given everything he had, and with Barcelona knocking on the door, he had to go.

When he left, he became the final piece in the best-attacking trio in history. From there, he proved Gerrard right. Going to Arsenal would have been a sideways move a man of his talent didn’t deserve.

Now, 500 goals after that first start for Nacional in his native Uruguay, we at Anfield Central salute him.
