Jamie Carragher urges Liverpool to make signing that would unlock 24-year-old

Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool to sign a new right-back to move Trent Alexander-Arnold into midfield permanently after his match-saving performance against Manchester City.

Up against the lightning-quick Jeremy Doku, the Scouser equipped himself brilliantly.

The stats speak for themselves with Sofascore data showing Alexander-Arnold won 15/20 of his ground duels, made two interceptions and three tackles, including one as the last man.

To cap it off, he scored a truly technically brilliant goal to level the score at the Etihad by controlling the ball under immense pressure before his controlled strike found the back of the net.

Speaking live on Sky Sports, Carragher urged Liverpool to sign a new centre-back to make Trent's move into midfield a permanent one.

“Liverpool haven’t got a back-up for Alexander-Arnold as it’s difficult to get quality to sign to sit on the substitutes bench,” the former centre-back said.

“I would love Liverpool to acquire a right-back who could play in the big games and push Alexander-Arnold into midfield. That could be the development for Liverpool to play him in midfield.

“Liverpool haven’t had a player who can score from that range since Steven Gerrard, one that you think has got a chance from 20-25 yards.”

Part of what makes Trent such a difficult player to defend against is his unpredictability.

In his current role, he appears all over the pitch. Here is his heatmap for the 2023/24 season.

It really depends on the route Jurgen Klopp wants to go into but it doesn't seem like a necessary move from the German.

If he adds a top class no.6 to his ranks, Alexander-Arnold will be even more free to make the runs into midfield that he has been.

With Dominik Szoboszlai so dominant on the right flank, Liverpool no longer need a marauding right back but instead are reaping the benefits of his influence on play.
