£30 million signing possible as Liverpool look to replace Thiago Alcantara

Liverpool are thought to be proactively seeking a replacement for Thiago Alcantara with the Spaniard out of contract at the end of the 2023/24 season.

You thought the transfer rumours were over, didn't you?

Well, Liverpool will always be linked with new transfers regardless of the state of their squad.

The latest story from the Liverpool Echo suggests a £30 million deal for Andre could be possible in January after a move to sign him in the summer transfer window was explored.

What's the latest on Andre to Liverpool FC?

Fans will be familiar with Andre after he was heavily linked with a move to Anfield before Liverpool signed Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch late in the transfer window.

The mood among the fanbase has settled after many expressed their concern that Liverpool would not conduct their business before Deadline Day.

Following the close of the summer transfer window, Jurgen Klopp's midfield options in no particular order are:

  • Dominik Szoboszlai
  • Thiago Alcantara
  • Alexis Mac Allister
  • Curtis Jones
  • Ryan Gravenberch
  • Wataru Endo
  • Harvey Elliott
  • Stefan Bajcetic

In midfield, Liverpool now have acceptable squad depth and a lot more quality than last season.

The Liverpool Echo's Theo Squires now reports that Liverpool may look to proactively replace Thiago Alcantara in January with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.

The 31-year-old, who is one of the greatest midfield talents of his generation, has struggled with injury throughout his time at Anfield and has been unable to show the Premier League just how good he really is.

Liverpool had a £25.5m bid rejected for Andre, according to Brazilian reports cited by the Echo.

However, with Fluminense loathe to lose the 22-year-old mid-season (the Brazlian season ends in December) a deal to take him to Anfield was always only possible in January.

Globo Esporte reported in August that despite Liverpool being willing to offer Fluminense €30 million plus bonuses, they would not sanction a move to the Premier League.

Flumiense president Mario Bittencourt even warned interested clubs in June 2023 that Andre would not be allowed to leave midway through the season.

“We are not going to deceive anyone, we have to make sales, but I can say that it will not be Andre,” Bittencourt said. “We are not going to sell Andre in the middle of the year.

"We even negotiated his renewal. Angioni, our director of football, is negotiating with his representatives. We have no proposals, no inquiries for any player. But the player who can be sold will not be Andre."
