Barcelona are banned from completing signings this summer if they don't find a way to sell £178million worth of players and Liverpool should consider a move to sign Frenkie de Jong.

"As of today, Barcelona doesn't have any room in its budget to spend in the upcoming transfer window," LaLiga president Javier Tebas said on Thursday at the Financial Times' Business of Football summit in London.

The Dutchman might have struggled over the last 18 months to show Europe the full scope of his abilities but he has been in fine form for Barcelona of late and Liverpool can now finally sign him.

Liverpool are preparing a summer of mass investment with midfield signings guaranteed.

The Reds would reinvigorate the whole team by making de Jong one of their new signings.

The 2022/23 season has exposed several Liverpool midfielders with the main two issues being a lack of intensity and quality.

The back five has been consistently exposed, resulting in early goal after early goal and Jurgen Klopp now has to find a way to bring consistency and stability back to Anfield.

Jude Bellingham has been identified and established as the club's key transfer target for the summer.

The likes of Matheus Nunes, Mason Mount and Teun Koopmeiners have recently been linked with a switch to Merseyside.

With Barcelona now once again in grave financial peril, Liverpool should act the way the Catalonians would if they were banned from signing new players by the Premier League.

Frenkie de Jong was chased by Manchester United last summer and the Daily Mail now reports they will reignite their interest in light of the La Liga president's statement.

A £63million (€75m) bid was made by Man Utd and agreed with Barcelona last summer but de Jong put his foot down, demanding to stay at Camp Nou.

The Red Devils have outperformed Liverpool this season but that will hopefully not be the case next season.

This could only be the case if there is sufficient enough transfer activity this summer. A midfield featuring Bellingham and de Jong next season would be thrilling to watch.
