The question of Enzo Fernandez’s future at Stamford Bridge has moved from background noise to front-page concern over the past week, as reports from his native Argentina suggested the midfielder is “prepared for another leap in his career” this summer.
The 25-year-old arrived from Benfica in January 2023 for a then-British-record fee of £107 million, and has since contributed more than 50 goal contributions across 160 appearances. This season alone he has 12 goals and six assists across all competitions.
Yet Chelsea’s current direction appears to have unsettled him. After the club’s Champions League elimination, Fernandez made comments that raised eyebrows — though manager Liam Rosenior has since clarified publicly that the Argentine is “fully committed” to the club. PSG, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Manchester City have all been mentioned as interested parties, though no formal offers have arrived.
The more revealing development is what Chelsea are doing in the background. Sources indicate the club has already begun scouting potential replacements, with Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson among the primary targets. Manchester City are reportedly the frontrunners for Anderson’s signature, with Chelsea and United also circling around a player expected to start for England at the summer’s World Cup.
Anderson is 23 years old, has made 40 appearances for Forest this season, and operates quite differently from Fernandez — more defensive in nature, excellent at winning the ball, though with fewer goal contributions. Whether he would be a like-for-like replacement or a tactical pivot by Chelsea’s coaching staff is a genuine debate worth having.
Chelsea’s bigger structural challenge, though, is avoiding another summer of expensive mistakes. The club spent extraordinary sums in recent years and is only now finding some consistency of approach. Losing their vice-captain and most experienced midfielder to a rival would be a significant setback, regardless of who they bring in.
Rosenior’s message of calm may or may not hold. The transfer window is still months away, but this particular story is unlikely to stay quiet.
