Liverpool should act fast if Trent Alexander-Arnold wants to stay

Trent Alexander-Arnold is taking his time to decide his future but it is clear he has not made a final decision yet. Liverpool are pushing to convince him to sign a new contract and Real Madrid want to take him to the Santiago Bernabeu on a free transfer next summer. The tug-of-war continues between the two European giants but the defender holds the key in the negotiations.

Liverpool have been in talks with Alexander-Arnold and his representatives for months but there has been no breakthrough in negotiations over a new deal.

The Reds do not want to lose him and have offered him a contract that would make him the highest-paid player in the Premier League if he agrees to sign on the fresh terms.

Jeremie Frimpong has been linked with a move to Anfield but Liverpool’s priority is to ensure that Alexander-Arnold is still at the club next season.

Real Madrid are in constant contact with the defender’s camp and will make their move for him in January when the defender will be free to sign a pre-contract with clubs outside England.

This is what Trent Alexander-Arnold is prioritising

If the negotiations with Liverpool enter 2025, Alexander-Arnold would hold all the power as he could agree a pre-contract with Real Madrid

However, according to TEAMTalk, the 26-year-old defender’s priority is still to sign a new contract with Liverpool.

His priority is to stay at Anfield despite all the noise around his potential move to Real Madrid in the next summer transfer window.

The defender wants to give Liverpool all the time to offer him a suitable contract and is not entertaining any other offers.

Alexander-Arnold would consider holding talks over a pre-contract with Real Madrid only if Liverpool fail to meet his expectations.

Liverpool hold the advantage over Real Madrid but they will still have to meet Alexander-Arnold’s demands to win this duel.

The European giants are still pushing to convince Alexander-Arnold to agree to move to the Spanish capital on a free transfer in the next summer transfer window.

Why the delay?

Liverpool want to hold on to Alexander-Arnold, the player wants to stay and the club are ready to offer him a new contract that would make him the best-paid player in the Premier League. Why hasn’t the contract been sorted out yet?

There is no denying the lure of Real Madrid and the effect it could have on players but if reports are to be believed, the defender still wants to continue on Merseyside.

Alexander-Arnold has a deep connection with the club where he has spent all his life, and so his wanting to continue at Anfield is no surprise but Liverpool’s delay in offering him a suitable contract is a bit odd.

If they want to make him the highest-paid player in the Premier League, then what’s the delay? Is he keen to see Real Madrid’s offer in January before committing his future? Most players would do it.

The onus is now on Liverpool to ensure whatever Real Madrid offer him, they match it. If they believe Alexander-Arnold is the future captain, then that’s the least they can do.
