Former Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham has revised his initial stance on Liverpool’s chances this season under new head coach Arne Slot.
Initially uncertain about how the Reds would perform, Sheringham now firmly believes that Liverpool are genuine contenders for the Premier League title.
Liverpool’s flawless start to the campaign has caught the attention of fans and pundits alike, with three consecutive wins and no goals conceded.
Sheringham, like many, has been impressed by the style and effectiveness of Slot’s approach, which has brought renewed optimism to Anfield.
He said: “I think there’s three teams capable of winning the title this year. Man City, Arsenal and, while I was unsure about them, with the new manager coming in, I think Liverpool will be up there.”
Slot’s impressive start at Liverpool
Despite initial scepticism, Sheringham now praises Slot for his quick adaptation to life in the Premier League.
Taking over from Jurgen Klopp – a manager who had achieved legendary status at Anfield – was never going to be an easy task.
However, Sheringham believes Slot has handled the transition with intelligence and composure, showing an understanding of the club’s culture and what Klopp built during his nine-year tenure.
Sheringham also highlighted Slot’s approach to keeping the atmosphere positive at Liverpool.
“Slot seems to have settled in very nicely,” Sheringham noted. “I loved his way of talking.”
His calm demeanour and respect for Klopp have reassured fans that the team is in safe hands.
Acknowledging Klopp’s legacy
One of the reasons for Sheringham’s change of heart was Slot’s tactful handling of Klopp’s legacy. Sheringham commended the Dutchman for the respectful way in which he has acknowledged the enormous impact Klopp had on Liverpool
“He mentioned Jurgen Klopp in a really clever way,” Sheringham said, adding that Slot reassured fans by stating that while he admired Klopp, he wouldn’t be making drastic changes to the team.
This strategy, according to Sheringham, has earned Slot the trust of the Liverpool faithful, who appreciate his approach to leadership and continuity.
A fresh Start with minimal changes
While Liverpool’s squad remains largely unchanged, Slot has made some tweaks, including the signing of Italian winger Federico Chiesa. Sheringham believes this level of minimal adjustment could work in Liverpool’s favour.
“There wasn’t a lot wrong at the club,” Sheringham said. “Things can always be tweaked, especially if you’re heading into a new season having not won the league in the previous year.”
With Slot’s smart management and Liverpool’s strong start, Sheringham is now confident that the Reds are serious contenders for the Premier League title, alongside Manchester City and Arsenal.
