‘More to come’: Club afraid Reds will bid for £50million star compared to irreplaceable Liverpool starter

Jarrod Bowen

Stuart Pearce has compared Liverpool target, Jarrod Bowen, to Mohamed Salah and says the way the two forwards finish is similar stylistically.

He told talkSPORT: “The comparisons between him (Bowen) and probably Mo Salah, the way Mo Salah finishes where he stands the defender up and stops him and then goes again or uses the defender, you use the defender to curl the ball around into that far corner.

“Starting a run then stopping it, killing a defender in his tracks then going again, little things like that, that’s why I think he still has more to come from his game.”

According to the Times, West Ham are worried Liverpool will bid for Bowen after they were tipped to have a bid accepted for the English forward.

A couple of weeks ago, Football Insider reported that Liverpool are “‘hot’ on signing Bowen and he is “keen” to join” if a deal can be agreed in the summer although I don’t think many expected him to sign for the Reds this month.

Former Leeds United goalkeeper Paddy Kenny told Football Insider that he thinks a £60m bid would see Liverpool land the left-footed attacker in the summer although one report suggests his market value is at around £50million but English players often command a premium on top of typical market trends.

Is Jarrod Bowen what Liverpool need?

A left-wing or a right-wing? A versatile attacking midfielder or a forward capable of playing anywhere across the front three?

These are the questions Liverpool will be asking themselves as they assess the market.

It’s clear Jurgen Klopp’s squad needs another forward but Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane are in need of cover and competition.

On one hand, Harvey Elliott has been playing in midfield but grew up playing on the right and Kaide Gordon is coming through the ranks. However, as good as the former is, they’re 18 and 17 respectively and the Reds can’t place too much responsibility on two teenagers.

On the left-hand side, however, there aren’t many in-house options for Klopp to rotate his Senegal sensation with when he needs a rest and as we saw last season and right before AFCON this season, he’s increasingly in need of a break.

His game revolves around bursts of energy and athleticism so if he’s worn out and fatigued it should not come as a surprise that Liverpool aren’t seeing the best of him.

Ideally, a new left-wing and contract extensions for Salah and Mane would make the most sense for Liverpool.

Mane and Salah.

A longer renewal for the Egpytian given his superior form and market value, of course.

Keeping Mane at the club until 2024 would be ideal if it meant bringing in a player who would then succeed him afterwards and give him the chance to help that new signing learn the ropes.

I don’t think Bowen is what Liverpool need right now. In Salah and Elliott, Liverpool have a truly world-class operator and a young starlet that can become world-class in his own right but on the left, it’s just Mane.

That said, suggestions that he’s finished at this level are far from being accurate.
