Steven Gerrard launched a sharp criticism of Eberechi Eze’s stuttered penalty attempt that contributed to Arsenal’s Champions League final defeat against PSG.
The match in Budapest went to a shootout after Ousmane Dembele converted from the spot to cancel out Kai Havertz’s early opener for Arsenal.
Goncalo Ramos, Viktor Gyokeres, and Desire Doue all scored for PSG before Eze stepped up as the second Arsenal player in the shootout.
After a convoluted staggered run-up, Eze sent his attempt wide of the post, handing PSG a significant advantage in the shootout.
Speaking on TNT Sports, Gerrard immediately rounded on the midfielder for what he called a “nonsensical run-up” at such a crucial moment.
“With all the pressure and the size of the occasion, why with all the nonsense? I just don’t get it. Put your foot through it and back your technique,” Gerrard said.
The shootout continued to twist after Eze’s miss, with Nuno Mendes’ effort subsequently saved by David Raya, briefly offering Arsenal hope.
However, Gabriel also missed for Mikel Arteta’s side, and PSG ultimately won the tournament for a second consecutive time.
Once the dust settled, Gerrard’s criticism of Eze’s technique reignited debate among the rest of the television panel assembled for the final.
Former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere defended Eze, saying: “I understand people asking why he did that but he’ll have practiced that in training, that’s how he’ll take penalties. It’s tough for him, he’ll be devastated.”
Martin Keown sided with Gerrard, arguing that Eze had overcomplicated his attempt at the worst possible time in the competition.
Former Manchester United star Owen Hargreaves was equally blunt in his verdict, dismissing the technique entirely without hesitation.
“No, I don’t like the stutter penalty. Pick your side and hit it as hard as you can. Just simplify it,” Hargreaves said.
