Scottish football faces a defining moment as SFA chief football officer Craig Mulholland pushes for meaningful change in how clubs use homegrown talent.
All 42 SPFL clubs have been called to attend a crisis summit organised by the SFA to discuss the future of Scottish football at its highest level.
Chief executive Ian Maxwell and Mulholland will host the meeting in St Andrews on September 4, describing it as “critically important” for the game going forward.
The summit invitation outlines plans to “discuss opportunities” around homegrown talent and hear from clubs who have successfully “optimised their elite talent level.”
Financial realities currently facing clubs in 2026 are also expected to feature heavily in discussions, exploring how economic pressures affect progress both on and off the pitch.
The meeting comes amid mounting concern over the shrinking amount of game time Scottish players are receiving across the top flight of domestic football.
Dundee United and Rangers both opened the new season fielding just two Scottish players, raising alarm bells about the direction the Premiership is heading.
Across the opening weekend of Scottish Premiership fixtures, roughly three-quarters of all players who started were not Scottish, underlining the scale of the crisis.
A troubling trend of promising young Scottish players being absorbed into English club academies has also emerged as a significant concern for football authorities.
Mulholland is determined to implement a new era of collaboration, with the SFA working “incredibly closely” alongside clubs to address the shortage of Scots in top-level football.
“We need to put mechanisms in place that encourage opportunities for young players to play,” Mulholland has said, signalling a clear direction of intent.
The St Andrews summit represents a rare moment where every professional club in Scotland has been brought together to confront these shared challenges collectively.
If actionable steps emerge from the meeting, the hope is that increased playing time for Scottish talent will generate significant financial returns for the wider game.
