Scotland’s most recognisable football legends have swapped their tartans for Viking helmets ahead of Norway’s World Cup quarter-final against England tomorrow night.
Charlie Nicholas, Graeme Souness, and Gordon Strachan declared “kom igjen,” meaning “come on Norway,” in a new Paddy Power advertisement targeting Harry Kane’s England side.
Thomas Tuchel’s England will face Ståle Solbakken’s Norway at the Miami Stadium with kick-off scheduled for 10pm UK time in the last-eight showdown.
The trio appear in traditional Norwegian dress, complete with Viking helmets and blonde plaited wigs, while eating rakfisk, a Norwegian delicacy of fermented trout, and performing The Viking Row.
The clip has already been viewed over one million times within just a few hours of being released online, highlighting the enormous appetite for cross-border football banter.
Ex-Rangers icon Souness plays his part perfectly, telling the interviewer: “It’s been a long journey for us Norwegian fans. We haven’t been to a World Cup since 1998 and honestly, I wondered if we’d ever get back again. But we’re here! We’re in the quarter finals and I’ve never been more proud of my country.”
Former Celtic striker Nicholas chips in with his own take, insisting: “People think we only have Erling Haaland but they’re so wrong,” before panicking when pressed on who else Norway have and replying sheepishly: “I don’t know.”
Nicholas is then quizzed suspiciously by the interviewer who asks: “Charlie, weren’t you Mexican the other day?” to which he fires back: “Not me, pal! People have been sleeping on Norway for too long – not anymore. The Vikings are on the march.”
Strachan rounds off the patriotic display by declaring: “We’re not just here to make up the numbers. Don’t know who we’re playing next, but they’re in for a hell of a battle!”
Nicholas returns at the clip’s conclusion to blow on the bukkehorn, Norway’s most iconic horn instrument, before bellowing “kom igjen” once more for good measure.
This follows an earlier Paddy Power effort where the same trio wore Mexican attire ahead of England’s last-16 tie against Mexico at the Azteca Stadium on Monday, which England won 3-2.
Scotland’s own World Cup campaign ended in disappointment after opening results of a 1-0 win against Haiti and a 1-0 defeat to Morocco in Boston before a 3-0 loss to Carlo Ancelotti’s side in Miami.
A combination of results eventually eliminated Scotland from contention, bringing a bittersweet conclusion to the nation’s first World Cup appearance in 28 years.
Steve Clarke subsequently resigned after seven years in charge, making him Scotland’s longest-serving manager and closing a significant chapter in the nation’s football history.
