Liverpool are plotting to bring in a new left-back next summer as part of their plans to sign a long-term replacement for Andy Robertson while trying to ensure that he stays at the club.
Robertson is still a valued member of the squad but there are concerns about his fitness and he has been in and out of Arne Slot’s starting eleven this season.
Liverpool do not want to move him on at the end of the season and plans are already in place for the club to open talks over a new deal with the Scotland international’s representatives.
However, the club also agree that they need a long-term replacement for him and Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez is one of the players the club have been tracking as a potential signing.
The Merseyside giants are also looking at options in Europe and Benfica’s Alvaro Carreras has made a great impression on the Liverpool scouts with his performances.
However, an old nemesis are intent on spoiling their plans of signing the Benfica star in the summer.
Ruben Amorim prepared to take him back to Manchester United
The 39-year-old took charge of Manchester United this week and he has already been in conversations with the club hierarchy over potential recruits.
With Luke Shaw’s fitness under the scanner, Amorim wants a new left wing-back next summer, if not in the January transfer window itself.
Manchester United sold Carreras for €5m to Benfica last summer but the club secured a €20m buyback clause in the agreement.
According to TeamTALK, Amorim is open to the idea of taking Carreras back to Old Trafford at the end of the season.
The clause will come into effect in the summer and Manchester United are exploring triggering the buyback in their agreement with Benfica.
Can you name the team Liverpool sold these players to?
The clause will allow Manchester United to re-sign the left-back for much less than the €50m release clause that is applicable for his other suitors.
Liverpool are interested in him but would have to pay 2.5 times more than Manchester United if they want to sign him in the summer.
Carreras has impressed in Portugal and fits Amorim’s need for an attacking wing-back as he looks to implement his style at Manchester United.
