Liverpool fans are waiting with bated breath as the Trent Alexander-Arnold contract saga continues to rage on with no solution in sight. The defender has yet to indicate whether he will sign a new deal or take up the chance to join Real Madrid at the end of the season on a free transfer.

The Merseyside giants have prioritised holding on to the right-back given his age and high ceiling but Alexander-Arnold has remained coy on his future.

However, he has dropped hints suggesting that he is likely to move on from Liverpool and end up at the Santiago Bernabeu in the summer on a free transfer.

Real Madrid have offered him a mega-deal to move to Spain and will make the formal offer to sign him in Janaury when he will be free to hold talks with clubs outside England.

Losing Alexander-Arnold would be a body blow for the club but watching him leave on a free transfer would bring financial pain as well given signing his replacement would be an expensive venture.

The club have been urged to make the more pragmatic call on Trent Alexander-Arnold

Losing a player of Alexander-Arnold’s quality for a free transfer in the summer would be a painful experience but Mick Brown believes it might not have to be that way.

The experienced football observer insisted that Liverpool should know by now where the wind is blowing with regards to the future of the right-back at Anfield.

He conceded that Liverpool would not want to lose him but feels if he would be moving on it’s better the club decide to sell him in the winter window and bring some cash into their coffers.

Brown believes if Liverpool have the chance to make some money from his sale, they should consider letting him go in the January transfer window.

Liverpool will know whether or not he’s going”, he told Football Insider.

“And if he’s definitely going, they might feel they can bring in a bit of money for him in January and bite the bullet rather than letting him go for free.

“They don’t want to lose him because he’s an important player and he’s a local boy and everything.

“But they have to be realistic, and if they’re going to lose him anyway, why not make some money?

“I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see them cut their losses and take what they can.

“That money can then be reinvested elsewhere if they want to strengthen the squad.

“Liverpool aren’t flushed with money like a Chelsea for example, so if they can make some good money from his sale it will be an interesting decision.”

Real Madrid’s plans have been to sign him next summer but it remains to be seen how they react if Alexander-Arnold becomes available in January.
