Rangers have been priced out of a move for American right-back Bryan Reynolds after French club Rennes tabled a superior offer for the Westerlo defender.
Record Sport understands that Rangers had an initial bid of £2.5 million accepted by the Belgian club for the US international.
The 24-year-old was understood to be keen on a move to Glasgow following the departure of former captain James Tavernier this summer.
However, Ligue 1 outfit Rennes have come in with an improved offer of around £3.3 million for Reynolds, effectively ending Rangers’ pursuit.
It is understood that Rangers will not enter into a bidding war with the French club and will instead redirect their attention to other targets.
Reynolds had been identified by the Ibrox club as a natural replacement for Tavernier in the right-back position ahead of the new campaign.
Rangers had also hoped to reunite Reynolds with his former Westerlo team-mate Tuur Rommens, who joined the club from the Belgian side in January.
It now appears virtually certain that the former Roma player will complete his move to France rather than Scotland.
New Rangers boss Derek McInnes is keen on former Ibrox utility man Ross McCrorie, who is on the verge of returning to the club from Bristol City.
Despite missing out on Reynolds, Record Sport understands the club remains open to adding further reinforcements in the full-back area before the new season begins.
Rangers have already strengthened their attacking options by adding Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland to their squad as McInnes looks to mount a serious title challenge.
The arrival of Shankland signals the new manager’s ambition to reshape the Ibrox squad significantly during this transfer window.
