Referees announced for Liverpool and Manchester City Premier League title showdown – it’s actually good news

Premier League trophy

The Premier League has announced which referees will officiate this weekend’s title showdown between Liverpool and Manchester City.

It’s actually good news.

Anthony Taylor will take charge of Wolves’ visit to Anfield as the Reds look to win the title on the final day after capitalising on the 2-2 draw between Manchester City and West Ham.

Southampton were beaten 2-1 by the Reds in spite of Jurgen Klopp making 9 changes to a side that beat Chelsea on penalties at Wembley in the FA Cup three days prior.

Michael Oliver will take charge of Aston Villa’s trip to the Etihad as Steven Gerrard looks to give his beloved Liverpool a helping hand in the title race.

Taylor and Oliver are arguably the best two referees in the league and hopefully, VAR will be on its best behaviour so that the league is not decided by officiating mistakes.

Liverpool need to win their game and hope Villa are able to take points off Pep Guardiola’s men.

It’s a tough ask as City are one of the best teams at winning league games when under pressure.

Jack Grealish

They rarely ever drop points in back to back games and so the odds are lowered even more after they drew to West Ham.

The only hope for Liverpool is that some miracle is produced at the Etihad by Philippe Coutinho, Danny Ings or even the likes of Emilian Buendia.

Villa drew 1-1 with relegation-threatened Burnley on Thursday evening with Buendia scoring a fantastic goal after making a run into the box from midfield.

Significantly, Tyrone Mings, who can be prone to making silly errors at times, was fantastic as he prevented a certain goal in the 85th minute with a goalline block on a shot from Wout Weghorst.

Liverpool will only be able to focus on themselves and will feel very confident of their chances of beating a Wolves side that boasts the fourth-worst form over the last five league games.

Even if Wolves were in form, Liverpool have proven this season that they can win games under immense pressure and are brilliant at turning up the pressure when needed as proven by their Southampton win.

The Mentality Monsters will be desperate to get a result even if it’s just to give the home crowd one last show this season.
