Olwethu Makhanya has reportedly gone absent without leave from Philadelphia Union, with the Rangers target accusing the MLS club of breaking promises over his future.
The 22-year-old centre back claims the club blocked a move to Europe, sparking a dramatic standoff between player and club this summer.
Sources across the Atlantic indicate that Philadelphia Union rejected a bid from an unnamed Belgian club for the South Africa international defender.
Makhanya featured for the South Africa squad at the World Cup and has attracted considerable interest from clubs on both sides of the Atlantic this transfer window.
According to The Athletic, Philadelphia Union turned down an offer worth upwards of €3.5 million, equivalent to around £3 million, for the player’s services.
Makhanya joined the MLS outfit from South African club Stellenbosch F.C. three years ago and helped Philadelphia win the Supporters’ Shield in 2025.
He remains under contract at Subaru Park until December 2027, giving the club significant leverage in any transfer negotiations this window.
Derek McInnes’ Rangers have made contact over a potential deal for the defender, though talks between the clubs are described as being at an early stage.
McInnes has already been active in strengthening his defensive options, securing the loan signing of England international Ben Godfrey from Atalanta.
Rangers are also closing in on Partizan Belgrade captain Vanja Dragojevic, with the Serbian midfielder set to join in a deal reportedly worth £4.6 million.
A member of Dragojevic’s family has taken to social media to confirm the transfer is all but officially completed by the Govan club.
Rangers retain a longer-term interest in Norway U21 international Jens Hjerto-Dahl, who has publicly expressed his willingness to make the move to Ibrox this summer.
However, Tromso are standing firm on their £7.5 million valuation of the player, with English Championship side Cardiff City also reportedly keen on securing his signature.
